Candidate Requirements

Charter, Section 13 Qualifications of Officers.

No person shall be eligible for an elective office of the City unless at the time of election the person is a qualified elector within the meaning of the state constitution and has resided within the city limits during the twelve (12) months immediately preceding the election, and in the ward the person represents for a period of ninety (90) days. The council shall be final judge of the qualifications and election of its own members, subject, however, to review by a court of competent jurisdiction. (Ord. 5741, 6-23-2010)

To run for mayor:
  • Must be a registered voter
  • Must have resided in the city for at least 12 months preceding the election date
To run for councilor:
  • Must be a registered voter
  • Must have resided in the city for at least 12 months preceding the election date
  • Must have resided in the ward you are running in for at least 90 days

Nomination Process

Nominations are made by declaration of candidacy, signed by the candidate, together with a filing fee of $5;

or by the filing of a petition containing the signatures of 100 persons having the same qualifications as the office sought and an acceptance of nomination by the candidate.

Filing Period

The filing period is: Wednesday, August 5, 2020, 8:00 a.m., through Thursday, August 20, 2020, 5:00 p.m. Accurate, complete documents are due no later than the end of the filing period. Allow sufficient time to make corrections if needed before the filing deadline.


Signs during an election

One temporary sign per issue and per candidate may be placed on property based on the ballot of an election within the district where the property is located. In residential zones, signs are limited to an area of four square feet per face and a maximum height of three feet. In commercial or industrial zones, signs are limited to an area of eight square feet per face and a maximum height of five feet. Signs may be placed 45 days prior to an election and must be removed no more than seven days after the election.

Stipend 

Councilors receive $130 per month, and the mayor receives $185 per month. The mayor and councilors also each receive a $50 internet stipend per month.
